Afghanistan's Abdullah rejects election result as 'coup' against people Posted: 07 Jul 2014 12:31 PM PDT By Mirwais Harooni and Maria Golovnina KABUL (Reuters) - Afghan presidential contender Abdullah Abdullah's camp rejected preliminary results of last month's run-off election on Monday as a "coup" against the people, putting him on a dangerous collision course with his rival, Ashraf Ghani. The Independent Election Commission on Monday announced that Ghani won the June 14 second round with 56.44 percent of the vote, according to preliminary results. Abdullah's camp responded angrily, saying the result was invalid as it did not throw out all the fraudulent votes. "We don't accept the results which were announced today and we consider this as a coup against people's votes," said Mujib Rahman Rahimi, a spokesman for Abdullah's campaign. |
Iran's Khamenei says U.S., Israel playing 'good cop, bad cop' Posted: 07 Jul 2014 02:21 PM PDT Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the United States and Israel were playing "good cop, bad cop" to intimidate his country into making concessions on the nuclear dispute with the West. "They make it seem like Israel wants to attack, but America is stopping it: the good cop, bad cop trick," Khamenei told senior statesmen at an iftar (fast-breaking supper during the holy month of Ramadan) function. The enemy has no other option at its disposal but make threats and impose sanctions." Israel has repeatedly threatened to attack Iranian nuclear sites, and been skeptical about the current diplomatic drive by Western allies to persuade Iran to scale back its nuclear program in exchange for relief in economic sanctions imposed over the years as penalty. Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful, saying Israel's presumed nuclear arms are the real threat to peace In a boost to President Rouhani, who has been accused of being too soft toward the West, Khamenei said: "All should know that I support his government and use everything in my power to help it. |
Hamas steps up rocket fire, Israel says ready for escalation Posted: 07 Jul 2014 12:45 PM PDT By Nidal al-Mughrabi GAZA (Reuters) - Hamas stepped up rocket fire at southern Israeli towns and Israel called up reserve troops on Monday in anticipation of a possible escalation of hostilities with the Islamist group that dominates the Gaza Strip. Israel said more than 40 rockets were launched as militants' funerals were held in Gaza. Thirty struck inside Israel and the rest were shot down by rocket interceptors, the army said. Hamas has vowed revenge for what it saw as Israel's deadliest attacks in which six Palestinian militants died, though Israel denied any involvement. |
Iraq parliament delayed for five weeks, general killed near Baghdad Posted: 07 Jul 2014 01:29 PM PDT By Isra'a al-Rubei'i and Ahmed Rasheed BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq's new parliament put off its next session for five weeks on Monday, extending the country's political paralysis amid a Sunni Islamist insurgency which claimed the life of an army general near Baghdad. Citing the politicians' failure to reach "understanding and agreement" on nominations for the top three posts in government, the office of acting speaker Mehdi al-Hafidh said parliament would not meet again until Aug. 12. Putting off the work of reaching consensus is a slap in the face to efforts by Iraq's Shi'ite clergy, the United States, the United Nations and Iran, who have all urged the swift formation of an inclusive government to hold the country together. With no signs that Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki will abandon his bid for a third term, his Sunni, Shi'ite and Kurdish opponents warn there is a risk that Iraq will fragment along ethnic and sectarian lines. |
From New York heroin dealer to Afghanistan’s biggest oil man Posted: 07 Jul 2014 02:11 PM PDT By Jessica Donati KABUL (Reuters) - One-eyed Rateb Popal's debut as an Afghan businessman was not promising: he was caught smuggling heroin and locked up in a New York federal prison for almost a decade. Popal had better luck once back in Afghanistan, where he emerged from obscurity to make millions in U.S. army convoy security following the 2001 removal of the Islamist Taliban. The Amu Darya joint venture with Chinese energy firm CNPC is the only major foreign investment in Afghanistan's estimated trillion dollars worth of natural resources that stands a real chance of succeeding and providing an alternative to income from aid. Though the site's Soviet-built wells are pumping oil and selling it to a nearby refinery, disputes over budgeting between CNPC and Popal's company, Watan Oil and Gas, have halted drilling and exploration. |
Central African Republic fighters attack church sheltering civilians Posted: 07 Jul 2014 03:31 PM PDT By Crispin Dembassa-Kette BANGUI (Reuters) - Rebel fighters and armed Muslim civilians killed "many" people in an attack on a church compound in the Central African Republic on Monday where thousands of civilians had taken refuge, Catholic Church officials said. The attack in Bambari, 380 km (236 miles) northwest of the capital Bangui, came just a day before French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian was due to visit the town, where a grenade attack injured seven French soldiers last week. Church officials said fighters from the Seleka rebel movement and armed civilians from the town's Muslim community entered St. Joseph's Cathedral around 3 p.m. (1400 GMT). As I'm speaking to you, they are still there," the Rev. Jesus Martial Dembele, vicar general for the archdiocese of Bangui, told Reuters. |

Freed Kuwait opposition leader vows protests to continue Posted: 07 Jul 2014 04:46 PM PDT Prominent Kuwait opposition leader Mussallam al-Barrak sent a defiant message to the government hours after he was released from jail saying protests will continue in the oil-rich Gulf state. "Putting us in jail will only strengthen our determination," Barrak told an opposition rally Monday night near the central prison where a number of activists are still detained. "We will not stop protests until we achieve the elected government that comes out from ballot boxes," the nationalist leader told a cheering crowd celebrating his release. Forming an elected government to replace the existing ruling family-led cabinets is one of the main demands for the Kuwaiti opposition groups which include Islamists, nationalists and liberals. |

Quake rocks Guatemala, Mexico, newborn baby among three dead Posted: 07 Jul 2014 04:40 PM PDT By Mike McDonald GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) - A strong earthquake shook the border between Guatemala and Mexico on Monday, killing at least three people, including a newborn boy, damaging dozens of buildings and triggering landslides. Much of the damage from the 6.9-magnitude quake was reported in the Guatemalan border region of San Marcos, where it downed power lines, cracked buildings and triggered landslides that blocked roads. Guatemalan President Otto Perez said the baby died when a hospital ceiling collapsed on him in San Marcos, an area hit hard by quakes in recent years. Authorities had earlier reported the death of two other people in San Rafael Pie de la Cuesta, also in San Marcos. |
Police uncover plot to bomb school in Nigeria's restive north Posted: 07 Jul 2014 04:39 PM PDT Nigerian police on Monday uncovered a plot to bomb a secondary school in the restive northeastern city of Gombe by defusing a car laden with explosives that had been abandoned there, a spokesman said. Police bomb experts found 12 improvised explosives concealed in a car that was abandoned on the premises of the state-run Pilot secondary school, following a tip-off, Fwaje Attajiri told AFP. Attajiri said an investigation had been launched to establish who was behind the foiled attack, refusing to say if Boko Haram Islamists can be blamed. Boko Haram, which means Western education is forbidden in local Hausa, has carried out deadly attacks on schools in the volatile northeast as part of a five-year insurgency aimed at establishing an Islamic state in the north. |

Newborn baby among dead as quake hits Mexico, Guatemala Posted: 07 Jul 2014 04:36 PM PDT A strong 6.9-magnitude earthquake rocked southern Mexico and Guatemala on Monday killing at least three people -- including a newborn baby at a hospital -- and injuring dozens. The quake, initially measured at a magnitude of 7.1, struck the Pacific coast of Mexico's Chiapas state at about 1124 GMT at a depth of 60 kilometers (37 miles), the US Geological Survey said. The epicenter was just two kilometers from the Mexican town of Puerto Madero, and 200 kilometers from Guatemala City. Two of the dead were in Mexico and a baby died in a hospital in Guatemala's western border state of San Marcos when part of a ceiling caved in, President Otto Perez told reporters. |
Top Asian News at 11:30 p.m. GMT Posted: 07 Jul 2014 04:33 PM PDT SYDNEY (AP) — Australia's government confirmed Monday that it had handed over a boatload of asylum seekers to Sri Lankan authorities in a transfer at sea, drawing outrage from human rights groups who fear those on board could be persecuted in their home country. The 41 Sri Lankans were intercepted by Australia's border patrol off the Cocos Islands in the Indian Ocean in late June, Immigration Minister Scott Morrison said in a statement. On Sunday, they were handed over to the Sri Lankan government after their refugee claims were assessed at sea and rejected. |

Norway to buy 21 mln emission reductions for 48 mln euros Posted: 07 Jul 2014 03:09 PM PDT Norway will buy 21 million U.N. backed certified emission reductions (CERs) for an average price of 2.28 euros each in its international tender to purchase carbon offsets, said the financial institution in charge of the deal on Monday. The Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO), which manages the tender for Norway, said in a newsletter that it is closing the first procurement under the NorCaP (Norwegian Carbon Procurement Facility), which buys carbon offsets above market prices to give a lifeline to projects that risk collapse. Landfill gas flaring initiatives in Latin America and projects to destroy nitrous oxide (N2O) resulting from the production of nitric acid dominate the portfolio, said NEFCO. |

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued the alert for Okinawa's main island, home to around 1.2 million people, as well as the outlying Miyako islands. The Kadena Air Force Base, the biggest US Air Force base in the Pacific, located on Okinawa's main island, evacuated some of its aircraft as officers stressed that Neoguri may be deadly. Waves could reach as high as 14 metres (45 feet), a weather agency official said in a warning that was likely to revive memories of Japan's quake-tsunami disaster in 2011. |
