Exclusive: Iran pursues ballistic missile work, complicating nuclear talks Posted: 15 May 2014 03:36 PM PDT By Louis Charbonneau and Parisa Hafezi VIENNA (Reuters) - Despite apparently reducing illicit purchases that breach U.N. sanctions, Iran is pursuing development of ballistic missiles, a confidential U.N. report says, posing an acute challenge to six powers negotiating with Tehran to rein in its nuclear program. He decreed mass production of ballistic weapons, striking a defiant tone just before nuclear talks resumed on Wednesday in Vienna. Tehran's often repeated view that missiles should not be part of the nuclear talks appears to enjoy the support of Russia, one of the six global powers. But a senior U.S. official made clear this week that Tehran's ballistic capabilities must be addressed in the negotiations since U.N. Security Council resolutions on Iran \"among many other things, do say that any missile capable of delivering a nuclear weapon must be dealt with.\" A ban on developing missiles suited to carrying a nuclear warhead is included in a 2010 Security Council resolution, its fourth - and toughest - imposed on the Islamic Republic for defying council demands that it suspend uranium enrichment and other nuclear activities of potential use in bomb-making. |
Mass funerals, mounting anger as Turkey mourns mine workers Posted: 15 May 2014 12:12 PM PDT By Ece Toksabay SOMA, Turkey (Reuters) - Loudspeakers broadcast the names of the dead as rows of graves were filled in this close-knit Turkish mining town on Thursday, while thousands protested in major cities as grief turned to anger following the country's deadliest industrial disaster. Rescuers were still trying to reach parts of the coal mine in Soma, 480 km (300 miles) southwest of Istanbul, more than 48 hours after fire knocked out power and shut down the ventilation shafts and elevators, trapping hundreds underground. At least 283 people have been confirmed dead, mostly from carbon monoxide poisoning, and hopes are fading of pulling out any more alive of the 100 or so still thought to be inside. Anger has swept a country that experienced a decade of rapid economic growth under Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's Islamist-rooted government but still suffers from one of the world's worst records of workplace safety. |
China blames Vietnam, says will not cede inch of disputed territory Posted: 15 May 2014 04:33 PM PDT By Phil Stewart and David Alexander WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A top Chinese general on Thursday defended the deployment of an oil rig that has inflamed tensions in the disputed South China Sea and triggered deadly protests in Vietnam, blaming Hanoi and saying China cannot afford to \"lose an inch\" of territory. General Fang Fenghui also pointed blame at U.S. President Barack Obama's strategic \"pivot\" to Asia as Vietnam and China grapple with one of the worst breakdowns in relations since the neighbors fought a brief border war in 1979. Anti-China riots in Vietnam erupted after China's towing of an oil rig into waters claimed by both countries. Fang said some Asian nations had seized on Obama's vows to rebalance military and diplomatic assets to Asia as an opportunity to create trouble in the South and East China Seas. |

Five women and three children were among the dead at the Bab al-Salameh crossing, according to the Britain-based group that tracks casualties in the Syrian civil war. \"At least 12 ambulances have transported wounded people into Turkey, the death toll is very high,\" one activist in the area said. |
Nigerian president to visit town where girls were seized Posted: 15 May 2014 12:23 PM PDT Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan will on Friday visit the northeastern village where more than 200 schoolgirls were seized a month ago by Islamist rebel group Boko Haram, senior government officials said. Officials said he would travel on to a regional security summit in Paris at which Boko Haram will be discussed. The Nigerian government has come under criticism for its slow response to the kidnappings. Jonathan asked France last week to arrange a Paris security summit with neighbors Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Benin, and officials from the United States, Britain and the European Union to discuss a coordinated response. |
Russian police arrest dozens after killing provokes ethnic unrest Posted: 15 May 2014 02:10 PM PDT Russian police detained nearly 60 people on Thursday after a demonstration venting anger against immigrants and demanding the arrest of an Uzbek man suspected of killing a local turned violent, Russian media reported. Some of the hundreds of protesters in the town of Pushkino, 30 km (20 miles) northeast of Moscow, chanted anti-immigrant slogans, toppled kiosks at a street market and attacked a bus, beating its driver, Ekho Moskvy radio reported. The riot raised fears of a new outbreak of racial violence such as happened on the streets of Moscow last October and in 2010 after killings of Slavic men that were blamed on people from the Caucasus. The protesters in Pushkino were angry that Zhakhongir Akhmedov, whom investigators suspect fatally beat a local man, Leonid Safyannikov, after an argument in a parking lot on Tuesday, had escaped arrest. |

China's actions in sea disputes straining U.S. ties: U.S. official Posted: 15 May 2014 04:36 PM PDT China's actions in maritime disputes with its neighbors in the South China Sea are straining U.S.-China relations and raise questions on whether Washington can work together with Beijing in Asia and on bilateral issues, a senior U.S. official said on Thursday. Washington is in close contact with the Vietnamese government on \"how most effectively to manage\" Hanoi's standoff with Beijing after China towed an oil rig into seas claimed by both countries, the official told Reuters. U.S. criticizes Nigeria over kidnapping response Posted: 15 May 2014 04:07 PM PDT By Patricia Zengerle WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A top U.S. Defense Department official on Thursday said Nigeria had been too slow to respond to the threat of Boko Haram but Washington is committed to helping fight the Islamist militants and rescue over 200 girls seized from their school a month ago. U.S. officials have said the effort to retrieve the girls is now a top priority but has been complicated by Nigeria's early reluctance to accept assistance, and U.S. rules banning aid to foreign forces that have committed human rights abuses. \"In general Nigeria has failed to mount an effective campaign against Boko Haram,\" Alice Friend, the Pentagon's principal director for African Affairs, told a hearing of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee's Africa subcommittee. \"The Department has been deeply concerned for some time by how much the Government of Nigeria has struggled to keep pace with Boko Haram's growing capabilities,\" Friend said. |

At least one house in San Marcos, 30 miles (48 km) north of San Diego, was burned to its wooden struts and a recreational vehicle reduced to a metal shell. "Even as we speak, there continue to be extraordinary acts of bravery and heroism out there on the front lines," San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer told a news conference.
