Judges sentenced Rios Montt to 80 years in prison on Friday after finding him responsible for deliberate killings by the armed forces of at least 1,771 members of the Maya Ixil population during his 1982-83 rule. Cameron to publish EU vote bill in bid to defuse party revolt Posted: 13 May 2013 04:39 PM PDT By Andrew Osborn WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Britain's ruling Conservatives will unveil a draft bill on Tuesday that could make Prime Minister David Cameron's promise of a referendum on Britain's European Union membership legally binding. In a political gamble aimed at shoring up Cameron's leadership, the bill would pave the way for an in-out vote by the end of 2017 that will decide Britain's geopolitical and economic destiny for decades ahead. However, the Conservatives are part of a two-party coalition and do not have a parliamentary majority, so the bill's chances of success aren't guaranteed. ... |

Iran's Ahmadinejad may face charges over election appearance with aide Posted: 13 May 2013 11:31 AM PDT DUBAI (Reuters) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad may face charges for accompanying an ally to register for the June presidential vote, the electoral watchdog said, in a possible move by rival conservative hardliners keen to pre-empt any challenge to Iran's clerical supreme leader. After mass protests that followed the 2009 election, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei may have looked to next month's vote to install a loyal conservative president but the surprise candidacies of two major independents could rewrite that script. ... |

Two car bombs ripped through crowded shopping streets in the Turkish border town of Reyhanli on Saturday, killing 50 people and increasing fears that Syria's civil war is dragging in neighboring states, despite renewed diplomatic moves to end it. ... |
